A hard cap, unless you say otherwise
Every plan stops at its limit. Reach it and the API returns a 429 until the 1st. It does not quietly keep going and bill you for it, because a charge you did not ask for is exactly the surprise we are promising not to send.
Overage, if you want it
Switch it on and you keep going past the cap, at the same rate you already pay: your plan's own price per thousand requests. Studio is $18 for 2,500, so it is $7.20 for the next thousand. No penalty rate, no cliff.
A batch of 1,000 is only charged once you have used 900 of it, so going slightly over is free. And you set a spend cap: at the cap the API stops. It is a ceiling, not a warning email.
Failed calls are free
A request that errors, whether that is bad input, too many pieces, or anything with a 4xx, never counts against your monthly allowance. You are billed for answers, not attempts.
